Op de dag van de operatie gaat de patiënt nuchter onder narcose, want dat voorkomt dat er eten uit de maag in de longen kan komen. In de voorbereidingsruimte van het operatiecomplex plaatst de anesthesiemedewerker of verkoevermedewerker een infuus in de hand of arm, waarna de anesthesioloog de patiënt begroet.
